Crafting a Strategy: Competition, Innovation, and Value Creation in the Craft Beer Industry
Sam Holloway is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Portland. His research on business model innovations examines how strategy affects the design of organizational architectures and has been published in Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings, Academy of Marketing Science Review, and Journal of Research in Marketing and Entrepreneurship, among others. His current research includes studying the business side of craft brewing. Based upon his craft beer industry research, Dr. Holloway authored the following article, published on Harvard Business Review’s digital site: Traditional Marketing Planning is Wrong for Your New Venture.
Dr. Holloway’s research seeks to answer the following questions for craftbreweries: How can small breweries compete in a seemingly overcrowded market? How can brewing entrepreneurs be innovative in their revenue model to bootstrap growth? How can small breweries maintain authenticity in the minds of core customers (stay small) and still satisfy market and investor demands for growth? Dr. Holloway has recently been asked to present this project to the Danish Ministry of Science and Education in Odense, Denmark and also has presented his research to the Guinness Global Brand Team at the Guinness World Headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
