Converting Inventions to Marketplace Innovations - Mini-Workshop Series

Lehigh’s Baker Institute, in collaboration with the Office of Research, will offer a Mini-Workshop Series on “Converting Inventions to Marketplace Innovations.”  This 5-part Workshop Mini-Series will highlight real-world experiences and best practices associated with transitioning laboratory inventions into marketplace innovations.  Subjects are relevant for technical entrepreneurship, commercialization of research, and federal translational R&D programs, e.g. NSF I-Corps and SBIR/STTR.


The Mini-Workshops will include a presentation, activity and discussion in the following key topic areas:

  • How Research and Technology Development Enable Innovation and Entrepreneurship
  • Role of Technology in Value Proposition for Customers
  • Designing Your Project Narrative to Increase the Probability of Obtaining Funding
  • Assessing (and Improving) the Readiness of Your Technology for Commercialization
  • Effectively Advancing Technology Development Toward Commercialization
  • Insuring Your Patent Has the Best Chance of Commercial Success

Graduate student researchers and engineers with competencies in these topics will differentiate themselves as employment candidates, and hit the ground running in businesses that focus on technical innovations and entrepreneurship that drive economic growth.  Attendees will gain an entree for participation in Lehigh’s innovation ecosystem.  Participants in these workshops will also have the opportunity to guide the direction of future workshops and courses related to this topic.



The Mini-Series will be led by Dr. Fred Kimock, Entrepreneur-in-Residence and Visiting Scholar of the Baker Institute (;
