Become a part of the GEW 50! Apply for Startup Open
Startup Open is a competition designed to identify and highlight new startups as a featured event within Global Entrepreneurship Week. Anyone whose business has a “startup moment” between November 25, 2013, and November 16, 2014 is eligible. A “startup moment” may vary from business to business and can include milestones such as securing outside investment, opening doors for business, a first sale, or incorporating the company. Applications must be submitted through the iStart platform.
Those interested in applying for Startup Open will have until September 16, 2014 to submit their businesses for consideration. All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges and the top 50 applicants will be announced as the GEW 50 on October 15, 2014. Once selected, the GEW 50 will have until October 18, 2014 to edit their applications according to the feedback they receive from the judges. The GEW 50 will be evaluated in the final round of judging and the winner will be announced during Global Entrepreneurship Week November 17-23. The grand prize will be a trip to Milan for the 2015 Global Entrepreneurship Congress in March; another prize is a stay in the GEW house in the Kansas City Startup Village.
The winner of Startup Open 2013 was Teddy the Guardian. Started in Croatia by Ana Burica and Josipa Majica, Teddy the Guardian revolutionizes pediatric healthcare by embedding sensors in a teddy bear that transmit a child’s heart rate, body temperature, and oxygen saturation to a doctor. By capturing these data points when the child is calm and at play instead of in a high-stress hospital situation, physicians and parents are able to gain a much more accurate picture of the patient’s medical condition. Teddy the Guardian provides an elegant solution to a pressing issue with state of the art technology, clear applications, and a reliable support team.
